LAUNDRY DETERGENT

I deep dived into laundry detergent after the birth of my first born, sweet Olivia. I was overwhelmed with all the studies relating to brain development, lung problems, allergies and asthma with fragrances and fragrances found in doing the laundry. My husband liked to remind me that thousands of babies have grown up without problems, but I didn’t want to be added to the statistics of those that were affected by something I could have prevented in the laundry department (not with the studies I read, ;)). So…I scoured the stores for a fragrance free option and found that there really wasn’t much to find that did not have fragrance and had quite a lot of chemicals and ingredients I didn’t want to be exposed to, let alone my precious newborn. So, I made my own and saved quite a bit of money at the time. This time in my family’s life, I had taken “vacation and sick time” to pay for my maternity and we had just a major remodel to our Seattle home and we were being as frugal as possible to say the least. So, these savings were welcomed, my stress and worries greatly decreased, and I washed laundry ALL DAY! We decided to go “old school” and I did cloth diapers…which I LOVED! That’s an entirely different story, but having detergent not only be fragrance free, but use ingredients that didn’t cause allergic reactions, was safe for newborn skin and I could control, made me a fan of this detergent!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Box Borax, Unscented (65 oz)

  • 1 Box Washing Soda (55 oz)

  • 16 oz Citric Acid*

  • 6 bars of soap, shredded (you can decide if you want it scented or not)

PREPARATION

  1. I do recommend putting goggles on and a mask, and making sure the kiddos and pets are away so any airborne ingredients do not get in their eyes/mouth.

  2. In a large bowl, shred the soap. I found using my KitchenAid shredding attachment did a lot of the hard work for me and figured it was unscented soap, so cleaning it was an easy step.

  3. Mix in the borax, washing soda, and citric acid with the shredded soap.

  4. If you want to add fragrance*, you can add some drops of essential oil and stir it throughout the mixture. Let it dry for about 30-60 minutes.

  5. Place in a large container, I like using a large glass jar with lid.

  6. Enjoy!

TIPS

* You can also add fragrance in other areas while doing laundry. See my tips for fabric softener

*If washing in cold, mix detergent in warm water first and then put into laundry/dispenser to help dissolve the powdered detergent.

**Citric acid can be slightly irritating for some people, so you can opt out of this and be a little more thorough during pretreatment of stains.
